AIM Academy announces Legal Training 101 covering music law for those starting out in the business

The AIM Academy’s first event of 2017 will be a legal masterclass taking place at the Interchange Triangle in Camden on the 15th March. This event is targeted at labels and self-releasing artists in the early stages of their career.

Sessions on the day will cover copyright, contracts, dispute resolution, negotiation strategies and international law; arming attendees with all the basic knowledge they need to effectively handle their business affairs.

The negotiation skills workshop will be led by Dr. James R Álvarez, one of the World’s leading hostage negotiators, and will provide attendees with the essential skills for successful negotiations.

The first round of speakers to be announced are:

Copyright 101 with Dorothea Thompson, Bray & Krais

The music business is built on copyright, so learn the essential basics of how music rights work. Including key music rights, terms, ownership rules, enforcement and more. 

Contracts 101 with Pete Bott, Swan Turton

As a former artist, writer and producer, Pete Bott has experience on both sides of the negotiating table when it comes to contracts and will be providing insight into the essential elements that make up a good deal in the fast-changing contemporary music landscape.

Dispute Resolution 101 with James Collins, Collins Long

This session will be an introduction into dispute resolution explaining the differences between litigation, arbitration and mediation.

Dispute Resolution Panel Discussion – What Happens in Real Life?

Following the previous session this panel will give an insight on how labels deal with dispute resolution on a day to day basis.   Speakers include: Rupert Skellett, Beggars Group; Matt Bristow, Cherry Red. Moderator: James Collins, Collins Long

Going Global – Impact of International Law, a conversation with Snooky Grubb (Mute)

Mute’s Head of Finance Snooky Grubb will discuss legal differences and possible difficulties in different countries and how they are dealt with from a UK label position. 

Negotiation Skills Workshop with Dr James R Álvarez

Dr James R Álvarez is an internationally recognised authority on advanced influence, persuasion and change management techniques. His extraordinary depth of experience as a hostage negotiator makes him a real-world expert in corporate behaviour change management.
