eMusic loses key independent labels

News: 17th November 2010 by Louise Dodgson under Record Labels, Selling & Distributing Your Music

Disappointing news for eMusic and its subscribers as independent labels Domino, Merge, and the Beggars Group (which encompasses labels 4AD, Rough Trade, Matador and XL Recordings) have all decided to take their catalogues elsewhere. The reason is not certain, although it is speculated that eMusic's recent move into working with majors could be the cause. Most recently Universal has partnered up with the service, and Sony and Warner were already on board as of last year.

This is a significant blow to the download service and will mean a loss of thousands of great tracks from bands such as Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, British Sea Power, M.I.A., Vampire Weekend, Wild Beasts, Radiohead, and many more. Ouch!
