Leeds music businesses gain insight into digital music distribution

News: 3rd September 2010 by Louise Dodgson under Music Training & Careers, Record Labels, Selling & Distributing Your Music

With digital sales now accounting for one fifth of all music purchases, distributing music online has become a key challenge for musicians and record labels alike. This free seminar will discuss how Yorkshire music businesses can take advantage of online opportunities.

Representatives from online retailer We7, distribution and licensing service AWAL (Artists Without A Label) and indie distributer Ditto Music will talk about the shifting face of the music industry and how this affects DIY artists and labels alike.

Plugged In Yorkshire, a network of music businesses from across the region, will host the free event at The Carriageworks, Leeds on Wednesday 22 September at 6-8pm.

Musicians and music businesses will be able to benefit from the experience of Steve Purdham (We7), Paul Bower (AWAL) and Lee Parsons (Ditto Music) as they share their knowledge and experience and discuss opportunities and challenges facing the industry.

The seminar will feature advice on how musicians and labels can promote and distribute their music online, licensing deals and revenue models.

Membership of Plugged In Yorkshire is free to music businesses based in the region and offers access to four members events per year as well as the online portal and discussion forums.

Plugged In Yorkshire is a free to join members network for music businesses in Yorkshire, Humberside and North Lincolnshire and gives access to a wide range of business support information and discussions online as well as hosting four events each year for members and related businesses to attend.

Developed over the last 18 months in-conjunction with Arts Council England and Yorkshire Forward the network is funded and supported by Screen Yorkshire, and administered by Generator, the UK’s leading music development agency, in partnership with Doncaster-based Higher Rhythm.

Biogs:
Steve Purdham, CEO & Founder Investor, We7

Steve is CEO and founder investor in We7, the new, ad funded music phenomenon. He has a passion for music, but apart from his early days as a DJ, his real success to date has been in the computer industry, an industry he has been in since age 14 (a time when PCs only existed in science fiction). Prior to We7 Steve was co-founder and CEO of SurfControl where he developed the company's vision and architecture. He took the company public on AIM, EASDAQ and the London Main market from which he generated hyper-growth creating a successful global operation with profitable revenues exceeding $100m. SurfControl was sold for almost $450m in 2007. Steve has been recognised with many prestigious industry awards including IOD Director of the Year.

Paul Bower, AWAL (Artists Without A Label)

Originally trained in graphic design, Paul Bower began working in label management at WAU! Mr Modo Records in the late 80s and later managed studio facilities for Bacon & Quarmby for nearly a decade. Paul has been running the AWAL Sheffield office since 2004 and in that period has signed cheques to the value of £1.8m.

In 1998 Paul produced a continental chart hit for Vonal KSZ, unfortunately the continent in question was Antarctica. Paul's own label Un! Recordings still bothers the world's media at evenings and weekends.

Lee Parsons, MD & Co-founder, Ditto Music
Lee Parsons is the co-founder and MD of Ditto Music. Lee and Matt Parsons started Ditto Music in 2006 and have had seven UK Top 40 singles and have seen artists like Doug Walker go on to sign seven figure record deals.

Whether you want to set up your own record label, become chart eligible, sell your music on pre-release, SMS, or sell music on a network of over 700 stored, Ditto Music means more choice and more exposure.

Ditto are working closely with Sentric Music to gain new sources for artist revenue. Sentric have recently placed music into TV shows such as 'The Hills' and 'Paris Hilton's Best Friend'. All artists who sign with Ditto have their music put forward for sync opportunities.
