Flying the flag for independent labels

The Arcade Fire's latest album release 'The Suburbs' has gone straight into the album charts at #1. You may be mistaken in thinking that to be propelled to this level of recognition they must have some major label funding behind them, but you'd be wrong! They are still releasing albums through US independent label Merge Records.

Although bands and artists starting out may want the big cash injection that a major record company can provide, there are acts that have made working with an indie label work for them, and have enjoyed just as much success. This interesting article in the New Yorker points out the advantages of independent labels...
